{"id":37347,"date":"2023-03-17T14:35:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T19:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/?post_type=nutrition_article&#038;p=37347"},"modified":"2023-06-21T14:37:57","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T19:37:57","slug":"three-different-ways-to-think-about-the-nutrients-in-eggs","status":"publish","type":"nutrition_article","link":"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/nutrition\/articles\/three-different-ways-to-think-about-the-nutrients-in-eggs\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Different Ways to Think About the Nutrients in Eggs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>Eggs are a nutrient-dense food recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), and there are a few ways to think about the nutrients in eggs:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The nutrients contained in an egg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The nutrients eggs provide within the American diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eggs as part of recommended dietary patterns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>It is a combination of these three perspectives that gives us a complete story for the value of eggs in human nutrition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Eggs are a nutrient-dense food<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/nutrition\/egg-nutrition-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nutrition Facts Label<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;highlights the value of eggs as part of healthy diet patterns, providing a good or excellent source of eight essential nutrients: 12% Daily Value (DV) of high quality protein; 15% DV of riboflavin (B<sub>2<\/sub>); 20% DV of vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub>; 35% DV of biotin (B<sub>7<\/sub>); 15% DV of pantothenic acid (B<sub>5<\/sub>); 20% DV of iodine; 25% DV of selenium; and 25% DV of choline.&nbsp; These are the nutrients contained in an egg that, from a human nutrition perspective, are present in meaningful amounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Eggs provide key nutrients within the American diet<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>Another way to look at the nutritional value of eggs is with national data of what Americans actually eat (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/data.nal.usda.gov\/dataset\/what-we-eat-america-wweia-database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>What We Eat in America<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong>&nbsp;which is part of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhanes\/about_nhanes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(NHANES)).&nbsp; The NHANES is an ongoing nationally representative cross-sectional analysis of the U.S. population that allows evaluation of typical dietary habits, including the nutrient contribution of eggs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/incredibleegg.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Nutrient-Contribution-of-Eggs-to-the-American-Diet_21-November-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHANES 2015-2018 data<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;show that, on average, eggs contribute 25% of the essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the diet, 22% of the choline, 12% of the vitamin D, 8% of the lutein + zeaxanthin, 8% of the selenium, 7% of the vitamin A, 6% of the riboflavin, 5% of the vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub>&nbsp;and protein, among other nutrients, for Americans 19+ years of age.&nbsp; For American children 2-18 years of age, eggs contribute an average of 37% of the DHA, 19% of the choline, 11% of the lutein + zeaxanthin, 6% of the vitamin D and selenium, and 5% of the vitamin A and riboflavin to the diet.&nbsp; What\u2019s interesting is that while eggs have small amounts of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (~29 mg), because they are so commonly consumed \u2013 they are in more than 94% of American households\u2013 they contribute to more than a quarter of the DHA intake of Americans, on average. And although&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Omega3FattyAcids-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher levels of DHA<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;can be found in fish and seafood, eggs contribute a higher percentage of DHA because Americans do not consume very much fish and seafood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Eggs fit into healthy dietary patterns<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>Finally, eggs can be viewed as an important component of healthy dietary patterns, identified as a nutrient-dense food by the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-12\/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DGA<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cVegetables, fruits, whole grains, seafood, eggs, beans, peas, and lentils, unsalted nuts and seeds, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and lean meats and poultry\u2014when prepared with no or little added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium\u2014are nutrient-dense foods.\u201d&nbsp; The DGA recommends eggs across the lifespan as part of example dietary patterns, including the U.S.-Style Dietary Pattern, the Healthy Vegetarian Dietary Pattern, and the Healthy Mediterranean-Style Dietary Pattern.&nbsp; Similarly, the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000000743\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Heart Association<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;has highlighted the value of eggs as part of healthy dietary patterns across the lifespan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>Overall, there are multiple ways to think of the nutritional value of an egg.&nbsp; These different perspectives continue to build a story of the nutrient contribution of eggs across the lifespan, from&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/incredibleegg.wpengine.com\/articles\/make-every-bite-count-with-eggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">babies<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/articles\/nutrients-in-eggs-support-healthy-aging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">older adults<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jen Houchins, PHD, RD<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":37348,"template":"","nutrition_article_tag":[28],"class_list":["post-37347","nutrition_article","type-nutrition_article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","nutrition_article_tag-nutrients-in-eggs"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
