{"id":37397,"date":"2020-11-04T13:43:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T19:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/?post_type=nutrition_article&#038;p=37397"},"modified":"2023-06-26T13:45:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T18:45:42","slug":"eggs-diabetes-and-the-current-scientific-evidence","status":"publish","type":"nutrition_article","link":"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/nutrition\/articles\/eggs-diabetes-and-the-current-scientific-evidence\/","title":{"rendered":"Eggs, Diabetes, and the Current Scientific Evidence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>The Dietary Guidelines for Americans no longer provide a limit for&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/incredibleegg.wpengine.com\/articles\/eggs-and-heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dietary cholesterol<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;for healthy people, &nbsp;however,<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;some questions remain about the cardiovascular impact in people with diabetes or impaired fasting glucose.&nbsp; New evidence supports that eggs can be included in a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/incredibleegg.wpengine.com\/articles\/eggs-fit-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthy dietary pattern<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;without adverse effects linked to diabetes, and in some cases, can be linked to beneficial outcomes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>Data from the Framingham Offspring Study were used to evaluate the effects of dietary cholesterol alone and in combination with markers of a healthy diet.&nbsp; No statistically significant differences in glucose levels across different categories of dietary cholesterol intake were found over 20 years follow-up, and there was not an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus or impaired fasting glucose associated with higher cholesterol intake.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp; In a separate analysis, these prospective data showed \u201c\u2026no adverse association between dietary cholesterol and serum lipid levels or CVD risk amongst those with impaired fasting glucose or Type 2 diabetes.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup>&nbsp; Although eggs contribute cholesterol to the diet, confounding factors have been thought to impact the relationship between egg consumption and risk of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/incredibleegg.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ENC-Diabetes-2019-Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diabetes<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp; A recent study found egg consumption is not independently associated with type 2 diabetes risk.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>A 12-week randomized controlled trial in individuals with pre- and type 2 diabetes found that adding one large egg to the daily diet for 12 weeks did not have a negative impact on total cholesterol levels.&nbsp; In this trial, fasting blood glucose was significantly reduced by 4.4% at the final measurement for the egg group.<sup>5<\/sup>&nbsp; Finally, participants with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes had no adverse changes in cardiometabolic markers when 12 eggs\/week were incorporated into a 3-month weight loss diet.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>The American Diabetes Association<sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0and the American Heart Association<sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0encourage people with diabetes to consume a healthy dietary pattern that includes nutrient-rich foods.\u00a0 A large egg provides eight essential vitamins and minerals, 6 grams of protein (12% DV), as well as 252 mcg of \u00a0lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids important for eye health.\u00a0 These new data continue to support that eggs are a beneficial part of healthy dietary patterns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div id=\"references-block-block_691f2bd5f95ad837bedd34d0fe44e007\" class=\"content-block references-block \">\n\n  <h3><a class=\"references__toggle\" aria-controls=\"references--block_691f2bd5f95ad837bedd34d0fe44e007\" aria-expanded=\"false\" href=\"#\">References<\/a><\/h3>\n  \n  <div class=\"references__ol text-block\" id=\"references--block_691f2bd5f95ad837bedd34d0fe44e007\"><ol>\n<li>U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Department of Agriculture.\u00a0\u00a0<em>2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.<\/em>\u00a0 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Edition.\u00a0 December 2015.\u00a0 Available at http:\/\/health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/2015\/guidelines\/.<\/li>\n<li>Baghdasarian S, Lin H-P, Pickering RT, et al.
