{"id":37400,"date":"2020-10-26T13:50:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T18:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/?post_type=nutrition_article&#038;p=37400"},"modified":"2023-06-26T14:07:49","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T19:07:49","slug":"how-the-nutrients-in-eggs-can-support-healthy-aging","status":"publish","type":"nutrition_article","link":"https:\/\/www.incredibleegg.org\/nutrition\/articles\/how-the-nutrients-in-eggs-can-support-healthy-aging\/","title":{"rendered":"How the nutrients in eggs can support healthy aging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>The Scientific Report of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee indicates that older adults may be at risk for low intake of protein and vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub>.<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;Eggs are a good source of high-quality protein and an excellent source of vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub>, as well as nutrients that are underconsumed by the entire population including choline (25% DV in a large egg) and vitamin D (6% DV in a large egg).&nbsp; Further, eggs provide 252 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin, carotenoids strongly associated with health outcomes throughout the lifespan.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;These are examples of nutrients that are particularly important during aging:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>High-quality protein<\/strong>: \u201dNew evidence shows that older adults need more dietary protein than younger adults to support good health\u2026and make up for age-related changes in protein metabolism\u2026\u201d<sup>3<\/sup>&nbsp;Eggs provide 6 grams of protein (12% DV) with all the essential amino acids needed to help maintain healthy muscle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Choline<\/strong>: Choline, a nutrient critical for cell structural integrity and signaling, is also important for maintenance of health in older adults.&nbsp; New research is exploring how choline throughout life may have lasting effects on cognition,<sup>4,5<\/sup>&nbsp;and one study found moderate egg consumption may have a beneficial association with certain areas of cognitive performance in middle-age to older adults.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub><\/strong>: This nutrient is important for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis, and many older adults do not consume enough. Vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub>&nbsp;is naturally present in&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eggnutritioncenter.org\/science-education\/nutritious-dietary-patterns\/animal-sourced-foods-much-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">animal-sourced foods<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>or may be obtained from fortified foods.&nbsp; Large eggs provide 20% DV vitamin B<sub>12<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Lutein + Zeaxanthin<\/strong>: The accumulation of lutein + zeaxanthin in the macula of the eye (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eggnutritioncenter.org\/science-education\/nutrients-in-eggs\/macular-pigment-links-eye-brain-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">macular pigment optical density<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(MPOD)) has been associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration,<sup>7<\/sup>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/visionhealth\/basics\/ced\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leading cause of vision loss<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;for Americans aged 65 years and older.&nbsp; Research in older adults has also shown MPOD is related to cognitive function in older people.<sup>8,9<\/sup>&nbsp;A large egg provides 252 mcg of bioavailable lutein + zeaxanthin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p><strong>Vitamin D<\/strong>: Eggs are one of the few natural food sources of vitamin D (6% DV per large egg).&nbsp; Together with calcium, vitamin D helps maintain bone health, but most Americans do not consume enough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block\">\n<p>Eggs are nutrient-dense, providing many essential nutrients for relatively few calories\u2014the nutritional equivalent of \u2018bang for your buck.\u2019 The value of eggs within a healthy diet pattern for older adults was reflected in a recent&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eggnutritioncenter.org\/articles\/eggs-and-heart-health-a-review-of-the-latest-research-and-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">science advisory<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;published by the AHA which reported, \u201c\u2026given the nutritional benefits and convenience of eggs, consumption of up to 2 eggs per day is acceptable within the context of a heart-healthy diet pattern.\u201d<sup>10<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;For easy ways to incorporate eggs into the diet, see ENC\u2019s&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eggnutritioncenter.org\/downloads\/toolkits\/ENC-BusyLifestyles-2019-Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Busy Lifestyles toolkit<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and new ways to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eggnutritioncenter.org\/collection\/put-an-egg-on-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Put and Egg on It<\/a><\/strong>.
